Kingston Hospital is an acute NHS hospital located in the leafy borough of Kingston upon Thames, South West London, England. It is managed by the Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. We were the first acute Trust in South West London to be licensed as an NHS Foundation Trust by Monitor (NHS), from 1 May 2013. In late 2018 the Care Quality Commission (CQC), one of our regulators, rated our services as “Outstanding” for overall quality and leadership.
We are a district general hospital supporting around 350,000 people in Kingston, Richmond, Roehampton, Putney, East Elmbridge (Surrey), Merton, Wandsworth and Sutton. We directly employ some 2,750 staff with another 300 staff employed by contractors but working on behalf of the Trust, and around 350 volunteers. Our hospital consists of 520 beds. We care for more than half a million patients a year, including:
127,000 patients seen in A&E
4,900 babies delivered
67,000 patients admitted
444,500 outpatient appointments
Our main site is the Kingston Hospital site but we also run a number of outpatients clinics in the community across our catchment area, including in Raynes Park, Surbiton, Queen Mary’s Roehampton and Teddington.
We provide a full range of diagnostic and treatment services and have a national reputation for innovative developments in healthcare, particularly in ‘patient-focused’ care across our services including emergency, day surgery and maternity services. Staff are committed to providing quality healthcare, working hard to ensure that we build up a wide range of clinical services.
We manage our clinical services through two divisions – Emergency Services (Unplanned Care) and Specialist Services (Planned Care).
The hospital has its origins in a workhouse infirmary built in 1843. The infirmary was separated from the workhouse and was renamed the Kingston Infirmary in 1902. It became the Kingston and District Hospital in 1920. The hospital joined the National Health Service in 1948 and began to redevelop the site the following year.
A new out-patients department was opened by Princess Alexandra in 1963, a new medical centre was opened by Enoch Powell, Minister of Health in 1962 and Kenley Ward was opened by Professor Sir Max Rosenheim, President of the Royal College of Physicians, in 1969. The Esher Wing opened in 1976, the Bernard Meade Wing was opened by Princess Alexandra in 1992 and the Rowan Bentall Wing was opened, also by Princess Alexandra, in 1994. A new surgical centre was built by Costain at a cost of £33 million, opened in June 2007.
In June 2008, the Trust opened the Sir William Rous Unit, for those with cancer or concerned they might have cancer, cancer diagnostics and management The unit is run in partnership between, Kingston Hospital, the Royal Marsden Hospital and Macmillan Cancer Support so as to provide care for patients with cancer. The Coombe Wing is a private patient unit on the site which was operated by BMI Healthcare but the contract was taken over by One Healthcare in 2018.
