Audits and Quality Improvement Projects

Audits and Quality Improvement Projects

Audits and QIPs are vital aspects of clinical governance and improving the service we provide. If you are joining us a Doctor on the Medical Training Initiative(MTI) or a Royal College Training Programme you may have set requirements as part of your curriculum to undertake / complete an Audit or QIP. Do check your specialty curriculum to be aware of these needs.

Audit

An audit is essentially a study carried out to see how we are performing in an aspect of healthcare in comparison to a recognised standard that should be achieved. This enables us to see if we are meeting required standards and identify any shortfalls/room for improvement and is therefore an essential part of service improvement.

If you are interested in undertaking an audit, we are pleased to have an excellent Clinical Audit and Effectiveness team here at Kingston Hospital who can support you with this. They also run formal ‘Clinical Audit Training’ and have drop in sessions to help you plan and undertake an audit. You will be able to find out about existing audits or register a new audit through them as well.

Please be aware that all clinical audit projects must be registered with the Clinical Audit and Effectiveness Team and approved by the Service Line Clinical Audit Lead before data collection begins.

To contact the Clinical Audit and EffectivenessTeam, please visit the ‘Quality, Risk and Safety/Excellence’ section of our intranet from the home page (blue box). Following this, scroll down to subsection ‘Clinical Audit and Effectiveness’ and you will everything you need here!

Quality Improvement Project (QIP)

Quality Improvement Projects are projects undertaken to bring about a desired improvement, often to correct a shortfall identified from an Audit. It involves undertaking a classical cycle of ‘Plan, Do, Study, Act’ and often it takes more than one cycle to bring about a desired improvement /change. Successful projects can be a great source of pride and these often have a significant positive impact on users related to the improvement.

We have a fantastic Quality Improvement Team at Kingston Hospital who not only provide training  on undertaking Quality Improvement projects but can help support your project if you register this with them.

To contact the Quality Improvement Team or find our more about Quality Improvement at Kingston Hospital, please visit the Intranet page by clicking on the ‘Quality, Risk and Safety/Excellence’ section of our intranet from the home page (blue box) and then selecting the ‘Quality Improvement’ tab.
